How to Spot an Authentic Persian Rug

The Persian rugs are famous among all the countries of the world. That’s why people willingly spend a lot more in order to buy a Persian rug runner. People often buy fake Persian rugs at a high price but cannot even understand. All the rug sellers may claim that they have Persian rugs but it is your duty to identify the authentic one while purchasing.

If you wonder how you can spot authentic Persian rugs among fakes. Do not worry, I am going to share the ways you can identify the authentic Persian rugs in the market.

1. Know the origin: When you go for buying a Persian rug, check the origin of the products. The rugs should be made in “Persia” that is “Iran” on the present map of the world. If you see that the rug is made in another country, then you should not buy the rug as a Persian rug. There are very beautiful rugs out there which are not Persian and you can buy them. But never purchase a rug considering that is the Persian rug when it is not made in Iran.

2. Check the bottom of the rug: Flip the rug and take a look at the bottom of it. As authentic Persian rugs are hand-knotted, you should find thousands of knots on the bottom of the rug. Besides that, the design of the backside of the rug should be the same as the front. If you see a clean-finished bottom when you flip the rug, you should think that the rug is not the real Persian.

3. Take a test of the color: The color should not fade away if the rug is Persian. That’s why testing the color of the rug can be a great way of spotting an authentic rug. You should pick a corner of the rug and soak the area with water. Keep it overnight and check the condition of the color the next day. If you see any change in the color that means the rug is not Persian. On the contrary, if the color remains unchanged that you are good to go.

4. Check the fiber: True Persian rugs are made with natural fibers that make rugs very soft and shiny. Moreover, these rugs are made with the materials such as wool, cotton, silk that’s why their price is often more than other rugs. If the fiber seems hard or slippery, you should be more careful. As the rugs made with synthetic materials should feel harsh and slippery.

5. Check the pile of the rug: Persian rugs are completely handmade and the size of piles is higher than those of machine-made rugs. The sign of thread should be visible on both sides of the rugs and these rugs have a cotton pile.

If you consider these factors while purchasing, I bet you will be able to spot the authentic Persian rug. Purchasing an authentic Persian rug is a great investment for your home decoration.
